Our learning philosophy

A real gift to children is to give them time and experiences, so that they can discover things when they’re ready at their own pace.

Imaginative Play

Children discover the world through imaginative play—exercising their bodies and senses, exploring their environment, and building their creativity. We create opportunities each day for children to engage in free play, both outdoors in nature and in classrooms equipped with wholesome, natural materials that children can adapt flexibly and creatively. Through play, children develop their problem solving skills and motor skills. They also build important social capacities, like empathy, negotiation and collaboration.

The culture is love and respect all around in the classroom, kindness and care.

 Homelike Environment

Each day unfolds in a warm, predictable rhythm that provides children with the security and confidence they need to grow and learn. Our mixed-age classrooms provide a homelike environment in which children are encouraged to care for themselves and each other in an age-appropriate way. Children help prepare and serve a warm morning snack around a family table, where they also enjoy lunches from home. A soothing afternoon rest provides busy children with needed downtime to absorb the morning’s experiences.

The environment outside, if you think about it as a classroom and imagine all the materials as educational materials, it’s just boundless what the children can do.

Learning in Nature

The idyllic setting of our early childhood campus is a perfect environment for exploration and growth. Amid 12 acres of meadows, play yards, gardens, forests, and streams, our children spend a large portion of each day outside—in every season and weather. They splash in spring puddles. They grow a garden in summer and build dams in the forest streams. In fall, the classes explore woodland paths. In winter, they sled and tap maple trees for sugar. These experiences help children develop their motor skills and sensory systems, as well as an abiding appreciation for the natural world.

We make sure that the foundation is strong in what the children are learning when they’re young, so that they can go into learning with excitement, with confidence. That is our mission.

Nurturing the Roots

Our early childhood program lays the foundation for academic learning and future success. Our curriculum builds capacities within each child for language, problem solving, creativity, and concentration. Through exposure to a rich landscape of stories, songs, movement exercises, art and handwork, students develop the cognitive and motor skills they need to transition into the academics of first grade. The rich imagination, social skills and excitement to learn they foster in our idyllic nursery-kindergarten serves our students through life.

Continuing the Journey:
Grade School

By the time they reach Kindergarten, our students are equipped with the foundations for academic learning and the social capacities they need to thrive in first grade. Most Kindergarten students continue on to our Grade School where they embark on an innovative curriculum that meets each child in a developmentally appropriate way.
