With some trepidation, I went to be part of the Nursery-Kindergarten’s parent morning this past Saturday. To my relief, this was to be a group activity—a hands-on workshop with local fiber artist Marcy Schepker. With Marcy's gentle guidance, we broke into groups and scoped our proposed locations within the Nursery-Kindergarten, brainstorming ideas to provide the children with dreamy images made from wool fleece that would further their own imaginative creations. My fears allayed, I went straight to the physical activity of the carding machine, a straightforward, prickly contraption with a bicycle chain and hand crank. Its creations, however, were magical swaths of color. We then embarked on a lovely, contemplative, hands-on, "painting with fabric watercolors” endeavor. With sustenance from the provided snacks, which included coffee, tea, apple pie, cheese, and crackers, we experimented with texture and color; swaths and puffs and pieces came together through the technique of needle felting. We created amazing pieces, I must say! Come see for yourselves the result of our handiwork, to be on display throughout the Nursery-Kindergarten building, and if you are a N-K parent, do come to the next parent event. I find it's quite a treat to do a bit of what our children get to experience every day—you may, too. -Michele Chalice, mother of Emily in the N-K’s Apple Blossom class
